Taurine Production in Plants

Taurine (Tau) is an organic acid that occurs naturally in meat and fish, but not in plants. Tau is required for the normal development and growth of animals and humans. Some fish, shellfish, and animals, as well as human infants cannot produce sufficient levels of Tau and must acquire it through their diet. Food and feed producers are turning more and more to plant-based protein as a replacement for animal- and fish-based protein and, as a result, must supplement their products with Tau. The majority of synthetic Tau is manufactured in China from a chemical process that uses known carcinogenic and hazardous substances.

Plant Sensory Systems (PSS) has developed a technology that allows plants to produce Tau, namely the Taurine Production in Plants (TPIP) technology. PSS is a sole source provider of plant-based Tau, which unlike chemically synthesized Tau is safe and sustainable. The TPIP technology has market value in several market sectors, including aquafeed, pet food, animal feed, health and nutrition.
